Eastern europe day 6


This is Birkenau. I don't think you can see the buildings that housed the prisoners in the background in this photo. Birkenau is a much larger concentration camp then Auschwitz but a lot of it was destroyed by the Nazis when they lost the war. There were 4 huge gas chambers that could house about 2000 people but all 4 have been destroyed. The only gas chamber still standing is the much smaller one in Auschwitz. The buildings in Birkenau are made from wood which is unusual. The ones in Auschwitz are made of brick. We didn't have much time to spend at this location but even in the short amount of time it was enough to envisage the magnitude of the human tragedy that occured at this site. The cold, wet and gloomy weather helped contribute to the feeling of the desolate despair that must have gripped all the prisoners and those who lost their lives in those gas chambers which no longer stand.
