While this has yet to be officially announced, it seems pretty confirmed that Tong Yao will be taking a leading role in this series. I’m basing this on a few Weibo posts that featured Huang Minghao at the ceremony marking the start of production for this drama series.

According to this article, the series is based on the novel “有喜” (You Xi) by 清扬婉兮 (Qing Yang Wan Xi). Tong Yao will play Shen Mingzhu. Mingzhu lives in the old town of Nanxi with her adoptive parents, who run a small restaurant. Mingzhu’s boyfriend, Feng Jianqi (played by Fu Xinbo), comes from an affluent family and faces opposition from his family due to their different social statuses. The two lovers end up getting married due to an unexpected pregnancy.

Unfortunately, Jianqi unexpectedly passes away, and Feng’s family begs Mingzhu to give birth to the child. Meanwhile, Mingzhu’s biological parents show up, and she meets her biological sister Xu Zhixia (played by Jiang Xin), brother Xu Zhidong (played by Huang Minghao), and sister-in-law Bichen.

As if things aren’t messy enough for her, her father-in-law dies of a heart attack, and the Feng family’s company faces insolvency as a result. Faced with financial pressures and a ton of advice from everyone, how will Mingzhu navigate these turbulent waters and emerge stronger than ever?

The cast for this series is quite strong and boasts many veterans and experienced actors in the industry.  Jiang Xin, Xu Di and Yue Hong have all worked with Tong Yao before with great success, so I'm looking forward to another collaboration with them.

Two directors have been attached to the project.  The principal director is Shen Yan who has directed some notable works like The First Half of My Life, The Examination for Everyone and The Heart of Genius.  Notably, Tong Yao had a small guest starring role in The Examination for Everyone and a cameo on The Heart of Genius.  The second director is Shen Yang, who seems to be less experienced but does have quite a few directorial credits to his name too so he's no newbie. The scriptwriter is Lan Xiaoxi whose work I'm not familiar with at this point in time, but it seems like she got some good buzz for All the Way to the Sun

As always, it's a good idea to take some of the plot summary with a pinch of salt. Adaptations of novels can sometimes take a completely different turn and only use the beginning or the premise as a starting point for the story. Regardless, with such a talented cast and experienced production team, “Si Xi” looks promising. I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing how this story unfolds and the performances that will bring it to life too.
